Deputies pursue fugitive near Jackson Area lawmen spent Sunday evening and part of Monday morning searching for a fugitive who had evaded them two weeks ago. Curtis Gregory Gainer, 41, of Gilbertown managed to evade police after stealing a truck in Coffeeville Aug. 16. It was reported to the Coffeeville Police Department that he had been seen in Coffeeville the following weekend. On Sunday Clarke County Sheriff's Department received a tip that Gainer would be traveling on Highway 69, toward Jackson. Deputies Ron Baggett and Larry Gene Sheffield were patrolling the Bolentown area when they spotted Gainer riding in a vehicle driven by a relative. The driver attempted to stop the vehicle, but Gainer laid down and used his hands to press the accelerator. Baggett had grabbed the car door, but Gainer continued to press the accelerator and Baggett fell and injured his arm. Sheffield also attempted to stop the vehicle, which nearly ran over him. The driver was able to bring the vehicle to a stop and Gainer fled to the woods. Officers from Clarke County Sheriff's Department, Coffeeville Police Department, Jackson Police Department, Choctaw County Sheriff's Department, Alabama Highway Patrol and the Alabama Bureau of Investigations joined the search. Tracking dogs from the Alabama Department of Corrections were also brought in. Gainer was spotted several times on the highway, but managed to get back into the woods and out of sight before he was caught. About 11:30 that night officers received a message that Gainer might be carrying a gun and had told someone he would not be taken alive. Unfortunately one of the tracking dogs was struck and killed by an automobile when it crossed the highway during the search. Anyone with information to Gainer's whereabouts is asked to call the Clarke County Sheriff's Department at 251275-3773.
