Washington County Public Library had humble beginnings
Next week, the library will celebrate its golden anniversary with a "Family Fun Day" for the public on Sept. 9. In the beginning the WCPL was financed by volunteer efforts. There were bake sales, pancake suppers and other fund-raising. The books were furnished by the Alabama Public Library Service from their repository in Montgomery. Ola Warrick served as the facility's first librarian from 1956-1970. Dennis Porter, who was a state representative at the time, would pick up and return books to the state repository during his trips to the Legislature. Later, library volunteers did this. At one time, the library was housed in a small building to the east of the home economics building, which for many years was the Laura-Lee Dress Shop, across the street from the Andrews Hardware. The original library board members were Howard Moss, chairman; Elizabeth Scott, vice-chair; Edith Wilcox, secretary/ treasurer, along with Eva Floyd and Lamar Agee who served on the first board. Wilene Quimby was elected and replaced Floyd in 1959.
