WashCo schools facing teacher shortage
By Ellen Williams SA Correspondent

A teacher shortage has become a problem for the Washington County School System, which is also plagued with teacher resignations.

During the Aug. 24 board meeting three more resignations were granted and one medical leave. Superintendent of Schools Tim Savage appealed to the board to help find teachers. "We're not getting applications," he said. "Even though six additional teachers were hired to fill vacancies, there were three other positions advertised for which no one applied, which added to the three resignations, leaves at least six places unfilled here in the third week of the school year."

In an attempt to lure retired teachers back to fill some of these places, Savage recommended and the board passed the following daily pay scale for substitute teachers: +High school graduate $50

+Certified teacher $125

+Highly qualified certified teacher $150

Policy for Admissions adopted

Another item of business which brought about some discussion was the Policy for Admissions, which Superintendent Savage recommended the board adopt. This policy would pertain to homeschooled students who enter the public school system. To assign homeschool students to a grade level, Savage recommended that these students score 70 percent on one of the

following measurement tools (to be determined by administrative personnel): a previous semester exam, a Washington County developed test or a purchased test.

Board member Clatis Becton asked if this was not requiring more of homeschooled students then regular students as 60 percent is considered passing. Sharon Beech echoed the same sentiment. After some discussion, Becton said, "Well, if you're comfortable with it (70 percent), I'll go along." Savage replied, "I'm very comfortable with it."

In other business:

+Superintendent Savage announced that Central Supply Company and

Dade Paper Company had the lowest bids for janitorial supplies and were awarded the contract for same.

+The board approved private transportation contracts for three families to transport their children to school. These students have physical needs such as wheelchair bound or a medical condition requiring the attendance of a nurse/parent at all times.

+The county technology policy was approved as was the July financial statement. When asked by Beech the status of the progress on the Washington County High School and Millry High School gyms, Larry Moss, accountant, answered, "We have a little more work on finalizing the loan. It looks like about November now." Becton asked about "groundbreaking" for these facilities and Moss said he has no indication as to when that will be.
