New Legion Field concession stand ready for business
Jackson Mayor Richard Long and Clarke County Superintendent of Schools Gerald R. Stephens met at the new facility this past Friday to shake hands and close the deal between the city and the board of education. The two entities worked together to make the new building become a reality. "This was a great opportunity for a partnership with the Clarke County Board of Education," said Long. "This was one of many projects we have worked on together for the citizens of Clarke County. Now this is a visitor's haven. People from out of town evaluate our community by how our facilities look and I am confident this one will leave a good impression." "We have a very good relationship working with the (See FACILITY on page 5-A) people who support our schools," said Stephens. "Our communities and the board of education work cooperatively for their benefit. This is certainly a usable facility to be proud of."
The proposal for the new building was made in late 2005. In March of this year Lewis Environmental of Thomasville was chosen as the contractor for the project, coming in with a low bid of $289,472.94. The city originally committed $100,000 to the project. The BOE agreed to pay $130,000 and the county recreation board contributed $20,000.
