JPD finds drugs during traffic stop
The South Alabamian Jackson Police charged a Mt. Vernon man with possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia after he was stopped for not displaying a tag on his vehicle. Officer Jason Thomas arrested Melvin Lephus McConnell, 57, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 25. McConnell was stopped at Highway 43 and McVay Road. During the stop, Officer Thomas found a container of beer in the vehicle's center console. Further investigation led to the discovery of a rock of crack cocaine, valued at approximately $100. McConnell was also charged with failing to have a tag displayed. He was placed in the Jackson City Jail and transported to the Clarke County Jail later Friday morning. Sgt. Willie Williams assisted in the arrest. Juveniles face burglary charges Jackson Police arrested two juveniles, ages 8 and 10, after responding to a residential burglary in the 200 block of Nichols Drive, Thursday night, Aug. 24. The police department received a call from a neighbor at approximately 10:58 p.m., who stated that he observed the two juveniles carrying a large porcelain piggy bank and controller to a video game console from the residence. The juveniles were located and taken into custody. They were released to their mother later that night. Both juveniles were charged with third degree burglary and their case will be tried in the Clarke County Juvenile Court.
