Coffeeville High School awarded $93,656 grant

Coffeeville High School (CHS) has been awarded an ACCESS Distance Learning Expansion Site Grant that will provide equipment and services for a videoconferencing interactive distance-learning lab. The total value of the grant in direct funding is $93,656.

ACCESS, which stands for Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators & Students Statewide, is a statewide distance learning initiative that will allow schools to help other schools by offering advanced level courses and electives that might not otherwise be available.

Presently, ACCESS Distance Learning is offering 32-Web-based courses and 25 videoconferencing courses. The interactive video conferencing lab will enable CHS students to participate with other educational communities and offer experiences that they would not receive otherwise.

For several years, the students at Coffeeville High School have depended on distance learning Web-based course/credit that provide them with some of the electives, core and advanced courses required for the Alabama High School Diploma/exit options. The new interactive distance learning lab at CHS will provide opportunities to access classes and courses not previously available, therefore, ensuring equity in education to rural students.

This 21st century approach to learning by implementing two parallel models of distance learning-Internet Videoconferencing and Webbased course delivery, will allow CHS students to benefit from a blended model of the two technologies. The blended model will provide students with all the advanced diploma courses, additional rigorous course offerings in core or elective courses, remediation and supplemental resources and Advanced Placement and/or dual credit courses. Advanced Placement Courses will give CHS students an opportunity to earn college level credits.

The new blend of interactive videoconferencing courses and Web-based courses will expand and enhance opportunities to improve students' achievement mentally, socially, technologically and academically by utilizing advanced technology to maximize and expand learning opportunities.

Letters will be mailed this fall to parents of grades 9-12 explaining the course opportunities for CHS school students. The ACCESS Videoconferencing Lab will be installed and ready by December.
