Back-to-School Jesus Jamboree well attended at Mt. Olive No. 2
According to Harriette Douglas, program sponsor, "The overall purpose of the event was to encourage school children of all ages to be their best and to do their best during the school year and to display their God-given talents to the Lord." Chelsia Douglas conducted the program. Playing instrumental selections were Martez Stewart, saxophonist and Joy Huggins, violinist. Both are graduates of Jackson High School. Others performing were Brandon Johnson, Thaddeus Douglas, Andrey Clarke, Delishia Daffin, Nashmonee Huggins, the Mt. Olive Baptist Church No. 2 Hope Ministry, Greater New Hope AME Church youth, St. Paul AME Church youth, The Heavenly Angels Praise Team, Ezell's Contemporary Dance Theatre, Leroy AOH Church and Blessed Voices. Speakers were Donna Holly, who gave words of encouragement; Althea Thomas, spoke on the importance of joining the PTA; Dr. Ozelle L. Hubert, career planning and health behaviors; Alfred Donald, proper behavior of students and Joan Bowe, proper bus behavior. Shirley Rodgers called the roll for students in grades K through college. Annie J. McKenzie recognized all honor students, athletes, cheerleaders, band, flag corp and chorus students. JoAnn Washington, director of the "Books of the Bible Spelling Contest", announced the winners of the contest. They are Amber Holly, first place, Chelsia Douglas, second place and Andresha Scott, third place. The winners received gift cards courtesy of Southwest Alabama Improvement Association. Door prizes were donated by community businesses. Harriette Douglas showed appreciation to Pastor Moore and program volunteers who assisted her with the program.
Winners of the Black History Essay Contest were Brittny Daniels of Millry, first place, Jasmine Holly of Jackson, second place and Cortez Williams, third place. Gift cards were presented to each winner. Sponsoring the contest were Harriette Douglas and Mid-Week Worship and Praise.
