Comments made at public meetings fair game for reporters During the past couple of weeks, members of The South Alabamian staff have fielded complaints about things that were said in recent public meetings being reported in news stories. This publication does its best to report the news as it unfolds, and that includes what occurs in meetings and other proceedings that are open to the public. Most newspapers, both large and small, across this nation cover and report public meetings. It is our policy at The South Alabamian to publish whatever is said in these meetings, either through direct or indirect quotes. This gives our readers a true representation of what takes place in meetings, which is our goal. We do not attempt to sway the public's view of what transpired, whether it be through our choice of wording nor the use of terminology of any kind designed to slant the article in one direction or another. There are times when statements made in meetings are printed, which may not necessarily be true statements, but are printed regardless, simply because it was said in the meeting. These are always attributed to the person who said them and do not reflect the policy of The South Alabamian. Whenever possible if a statement made is controversial, The South Alabamian will attempt to obtain statements from all parties involved. But, this is not always possible due to our deadline restrictions. We are, however, happy to publish opposing views on the editorial page as long as they meet our publication requirements.
The South Alabamian will continue its tradition of presenting the news to its readers in a manner that represents how events actually occur. We welcome your comments on our coverage of local events, because this newspaper is here for one purpose only-to provide our readers with the best news coverage possible.
