LHS PTO workday Aug. 26

The Leroy High School PTO workday is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 26 at 7:30 a.m. Everyone is asked to participate.

Washington County Library

upcoming dates

The Washington County Library in Chatom has a number of activities planned.

Beginning Thursday, Aug. 24 and continuing through Nov. 23, there will be a new Ciba Science Center exhibit titled, "Astronomy-The Science of Space".

A "Golden Anniversary Reception" is planned for Thursday, Sept. 7 from 5-7 p.m. It will honor the founders and supporters from the last 50 years.

On Saturday, Sept. 9, 3-8 p.m., "The Golden Anniversary Celebration" is planned. Everyone is asked to bring a chair to the library when they attend the celebration. There will be free food, drinks, music, games and lots of family fun.

JHS Class of 1979 to be recognized

The Jackson High School Quarterback Club will recognize the members of the JHS 1979 championship football team on Sept. 22 during the pregame ceremony. All team members are invited to participate at Legion Field. If attending, e-mail bolen_K@bellsouth.net or call 1-800-474-3605 to rsvp or request more information.

Applications to be taken at Head Start

On Monday, Aug. 21, Harper & Fulton Head Start staffs will be available to take applications for the upcoming 2006-2007 year, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing to 1 p.m. at the Harper Head Start Center.

To complete an application, please bring the following information: proof of income, birth certificate, immunization record, proof of insurance (Medicaid, All Kids, Private) and Social Security cards of all household members.

Jackson Pee Wee football

board meeting Aug. 18

Jackson Pee Wee football will be having a board meeting at Jackson Municipal Pool Friday, Aug. 18, 6 p.m. All coaches are asked to attend.

VFW 5355 meetings

The VFW Post 5355 and ladies auxiliary meets the third Thursday of every month, 6 p.m., at the VFW Club on Club Wiley Road. Members are urged to attend and new members are welcome.

Sickle Cell support

Sickle Cell education and support group meets the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m., at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital.

Diabetic support

The Diabetic Support Group meets the first and third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the dining room at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital.

Diabetes education is also provided by the hospital free of charge. To schedule an appointment call (251) 275-3191, ext. 507.

AA/Alanon meetings

The following meetings are conducted in the fellowship hall, Visitation Catholic Church, West Clinton Street in Jackson: AA - Wednesday, 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9:00 a.m. Alanon - Monday - 6:30 p.m. For directions call 251-246-9238.

Salvation Army is open

The Salvation Army Store in Jackson is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The store is located in downtown Jackson in the old antique mall.

Parden Family reunion Sept. 2

The Parden Family reunion will be Saturday, Sept. 2 at Bethel Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Coffeeville.

NRA conducting dinner/auction

Friends of the National Rifle Association (NRA) will be conducting a dinner and auction Saturday, Aug. 26, 6 p.m. at the Chatom Community Center.

Tickets are $25 each.

Registration Aug. 17 for BTAS

The Ballet and Theatre Arts School, located at 253 College Street in Gilbertown, will be conducting fall 2006 registration on Thursday (today), Aug. 17 from 3:30-6 p.m.

Performing arts classes will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

JHS Class of 1997 planning reunion

The Jackson High School Class of 1997 is planning a 10-year reunion in 2007.

Oktoberfest planned at Faulkner University

Oktoberfest Extravaganza, a free event open to the public, is being conducted on the Faulkner University campus in Montgomery from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., Oct. 14.

The Oktoberfest is a blend of fun, food, crafts, retail vendors, flea market items and more.
