SFC Gary Little returns home from Iraq
Happy to see family after eight months

Farrell, Pa. resident SFC Gary Little, a U.S. Army Reserve soldier and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Little of Mobile, recently completed a tour of duty in northwestern Iraq. He returned home to Mobile on Sunday, July 30 and was welcomed home by his family.

SFC Little earned the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge while serving as an advisor to a 2,300 strong Iraqi Army Infantry Brigade. SFC Little's team was composed of 40 soldiers and officers from the 80th Division headquartered in Richmond, Va.

During his tour of duty in Iraq, SFC Little served as the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer advisor for a Transition Team where he worked daily to advise Iraqi Army NCOs and soldiers in operational and logistical tactics and procedures.

SFC Little and his team served in Iraq from November 2005 until July 2006 during which time the unit they advised, the 3rd Brigade of the 3rd Division Iraqi Army, participated in dozens of successful counter-insurgency missions with U.S. and Iraqi forces across a large portion of northwestern Iraq as well as numerous Combat Logistics Patrols in western Ninewah Province.

SFC Little's responsibilities included training of Iraqi soldiers in basic soldier skills, marksmanship, and vehicle maintenance. SFC Little's team worked closely with their Iraqi Army counterparts to conduct security missions along the Syrian border and in the area to the west of Tal Afar in support of operations in that city during the fall and winter of 2005 and the spring of 2006.

As an advisor to the new Iraqi Army, SFC Little worked alongside Iraqi Border Police and Iraqi Police members as well as Iraqi Army soldiers in conducting joint operations ensuring the security of many Iraqi towns between Tal Afar and the Syrian border. SFC Little survived two rocket attacks in his last 60 days in Iraq and participated in more than 75 combat patrols while serving in Iraq.

SFC Little is happy to be back home with his wife Heather and his 20-month-old son, Jakob. His wife is the former Heather Dunn, daughter of Nancy and Steve Dunn of Jackson.

He said he is looking forward to returning to his full-time job as the Training NCO for the 4th Brigade, 80th Division in Farrell, Pa.
