support group
A support group for those persons who have received or are interested in gastric bypass surgery will be meeting at the First United Methodist Church in Jackson on the third Tuesday of each month.

VFW 5355 meetings
The VFW Post 5355 and ladies auxiliary will meet the third Thursday of every month, 6 p.m., at the VFW Club on Club Wiley Road.
Members are urged to attend and new members are welcome.
Sickle Cell support
Sickle Cell education and support group meets the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m., at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital.
Diabetic Support
The Diabetic Support Group meets the first and third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the dining room at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital.
Diabetes education is also provided by the hospital free of charge. To schedule an appointment call (251) 275-3191, ext. 507.
Library art auction
Friends of the Washington County Public Library in Chatom will sponsor the annual art auction and dinner at the Washington County Community Center on Friday, Feb. 18, 4:30 p.m. until midnight.
The evening of activities will include dinner, live auction, silent auction and raffles. Door prizes will also be awarded.

CCBOE meets Jan. 26
The date for the January meeting of the Clarke County Board of Education has been changed from Jan. 27 to Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m.
Ebony Fashion Fair
The annual Ebony Fashion Fair, in support of patients stricken with sickle cell anemia, will be held Friday, Feb. 25 at the Mobile Civic Center.
The event will include a silent auction and live music after the program. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $75 for reserved seating, which includes dinner. WSA to start flag
football league
The Wagarville Softball Association is working to start a men’s flag football league that will begin playing in February. The games will be played with teams of eight-on-eight and will be officiated by licensed officials. Games will be played on Saturdays at the Wagarville Park. For more information call 247-0027.
Tsunami relief raffle
Clarke County People First (CCPF) will be selling $1 raffle tickets through Jan. 31.
The winning ticket, to be drawn on Feb. 1, will receive $100 cash. CCPF members will be selling tickets at Wal-Mart in Jackson and Thomasville on Saturday, Jan. 29.
All proceeds will be given to a Tsunami Relief fund sponsored through Volunteers of America Southeast and Regions Bank. Your support of CCPF’s efforts will be greatly appreciated.
Wade account
An account has been opened at Regions Bank for the Elroy Wade Sr. family to pay doctor, hospital and household bills under Denise Wade’s name. The only income they have is brought in by Denise’s substitute teaching job at Gillmore Elementary School. All donations are appreciated. Mr. Wade has had open heart surgery replacing the main valve to the heart, two light strokes as well as currently fighting infection.
Survey volunteers sought by food bank
Bay Area Food Bank is participating in a national hunger study crucial in identifying hunger related issues along the Gulf Coast. The results will be shared throughout the service area and be part of consolidated reports at the state and national levels. The Food Bank is recruiting 40 volunteers to conduct client interviews at emergency kitchens, shelters and pantries throughout the 19 county service areas, which include Clarke and Washington counties. OES serves gumbo
The Sue Bell Johnson Chapter No. 568 Order of the Eastern Star in Frankville will sponsor a gumbo sale, Jan. 22, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., at the Old Frankville School building. Meet Nick Williams
A special reception for House 65 candidate Nick Williams will be held at the Kimble House at 4 p.m., Nov. 22, to give the public a chance to meet him and discuss his ideas to work to help improve the area. Everyone is invited to attend.
Contest to celebrate Black History Month
White Smith Memorial Library will be hosting a "Who am I?" contest in honor of Black History Month. Children in grades 3-8 can participate either at school if allowed by teachers or may pick up the activity book and questionnaire at White Smith Memorial Library beginning Feb.1.
Each participant with all correct answers will qualify for a drawing that will be held Feb. 28 for the grand prize. This program provides an opportunity for children to learn about many famous African Americans while having fun.
New hours at
WashCo Library
The Washington County Public Library recently announced new hours. The facility is now open until 7 on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
New hours are:
Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Tuesday and Thursday: 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: Closed
Quarterback club solicits donations
The Leroy Quarterback Club is currently soliciting donations from individuals, alumni and businesses to pay for state championship rings. Any donation may be made to the Leroy Quarterback Club at P.O. Box 123, Leroy, AL 36548. Receipts will be made if return address is included.
Black hooded sweatshirts and white or gray T-shirts are being sold, as well as raffle tickets at $5 a chance on a 270 rifle and one two-person quail hunt at Bear Creek Quail Farm with all proceeds going to this fund.
Please confirm when purchasing merchandise that the proceeds are supporting the ring fund. Items are being sold in the area that do not benefit the school or team.
WCHS Athletic Club
There will be a WCHS Athletic Club meeting in the AG building behind the high school on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. We will be accepting membership dues at this meeting.
