‘55 Alive’ driving class

AARP will be presenting the driving instruction class entitled "55 Alive", for a $10 fee, Thursday, Oct. 2, at the First Presbyterian Church, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. with a one-hour break for the lunch period.

The instructor for this presentation is Jack Thomas of Mobile. No actual driving is required.

Those attending, ages 55 and over, may find that some insurance companies do grant a small discount for customers completing the class.

All persons ages 50 and over are encouraged to attend. For additional information contact Buff McDonald at 246-3129.

SSHC annual meeting

The annual meeting of the St. Stephens Historical Commis-sion will be Sept. 26, 11 a.m. at the Old Washington County Courthouse/Museum in St. Stephens.

Pace family reunion

Descendants of Allen and Ruby Etheredge Pace and friends of the family are invited to a reunion on Sept. 27 at the VFW Club on Club Wiley Road in Jackson, beginning at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served at 12 p.m. and entertainment will follow.

All family members are asked to bring a covered dish and family pictures.

AFD fund raising

The Alma Fire Department will be having a door-to-door fund-raiser beginning the week of Oct. 22. All donations are appreciated. The AFD will also be giving free fire inspections.

JHS 1978 class reunion

There will be a class reunion meeting Sunday, Sept. 21, 5 p.m. at Illusions Nails & Accessories, 1207 College Ave., Jackson.

Men’s fellowship

The Rev. Glen Smith will be the guest speaker for a Men’s Christian Fellowship gathering at The Fish House, Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m., sponsored by Day Star Church of God.

The descendants of Jeff and Lulu Sheffield will meet at Hidden Valley Ponds in McVay on Sunday Sept. 21 at 9 a.m. Bring a covered dish and enjoy the fellowship.

Tribal Culture Festival

This month the MOWA Choctaw Cultural Center is sponsoring a Tribal Culture Festival at their reservation located on Red Fox Road in Mt. Vernon, Sept. 26 & 27. The two days of Native American activities will include tours through their museum and reference library, Native American exhibition dances, arts and crafts, re-enactment of Dancing Rabbit Creek and much, much more.

All schools are invited to attend from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26. A special ceremony will be held between the hours of 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 27 to dedicate the new gymnasium in honor of Gallasneed Weaver.

Saturday morning the gates will open at 9 a.m. - until. The public is invited to attend. Admission is $5.

The MOWA Reservation is located about 20 minutes north of I-65’s exit No. 19 at Satsuma. Take Highway 43 from exit 19 and follow the signs north to Red Fox Road.

Maharrey’s Homecoming

The Maharreys will host Homecoming 2003 in St. Stephens Sept. 26 and 27.

The two-day event will begin that Friday night with a bluegrass jam. There will be free food for everyone and all those who play an instrument are encouraged to bring it and join in the fun.

Saturday will begin at 9 a.m. with Breakfast With The Maharreys. A southern style breakfast featuring grits, eggs, biscuits, tomato gravy and fresh fruit will be served. Those attending will also be treated to live music by the Maharreys.

After breakfast, ticket holders can enjoy Saturday in the Park at St. Stephens Historical Park, which offers fishing, playgrounds, nature trails, Indian bathtubs and the St. Stephens Museum.

That evening a concert featuring the Maharreys, The McRaes, The Next Generation, The Ambassadors and other groups, will begin at 6 p.m.

Advance tickets for the two-day event are $10 and $5 for children 11 and under. Friday’s bluegrass jam is free to advance ticket holders.
